Semiotical Analysis

There are so many different ways to listen to our favourite bands; we can buy CDs and Vinyls from shops, stream them online or download them onto our desktop or phones.

Album covers have changed over the years. There are countless albums with unique themes, colour schemes and style in order to draw people in, album covers can also reflect what kind of music is on said album.

The Artic Monkey’s fourth album “AM” had a very simplistic design which most people instantly associate it to Artic Monkeys upon seeing it as it has become a very well known album, despite being very plain. The album was released late 2012.

Some of the messages behind certain songs in albums or the album entirely, this can be because of the different times these albums were created and released meaning opinions were a lot more diverse. However, now people are more open to hearing what others have to say or what others feel.

The growing artist “grandson” is known for talking about troubling topics, for example his song “Stick Up” is discussing school shootings that have been occurring in America,  “Overdose” is about someone who is struggling with a drug addiction. Both of these topics would not have been thought about around thirty or forty years ago as it wasn’t something people liked to discuss. One of his most popular singles ‘Blood/Water’ is talking about war. Grandson is mainly classed as a rock or hip hop artist.

A similar artist who goes by the name of “YUNGBLUD” also talks about very serious subjects, for example, his song “Polygraph eyes” sheds light on women being taking advantage of whilst partying- a topic not many people are open about, even today, as it can still be a tough topic to discuss. One of his newest songs “Medication” talks about having to take medication due to mental illnesses, a topic that is beginning to become more accepted and understood. In an interview he admitted that his style was inspired by the Artic Monkeys and many other artists as he had been involved in music since a young age and developed from there.

YUNGBLUD is known for mixing up his genres, he had said that he didn’t like the idea of being known for just one genre so he began to experiment with different genres and mixing them together. However the majority of his music is classed as alternative rock.
