Tom Hussey is an American photographer who specialises in commercial advertising. One of his most popular pieces are the set of photographs he originally in 2010, “Reflections” which he took for Novartis’ campaign; Exon patches, a pharmaceutical drug created to help cases of mild to moderate Alzheimers disease and Parkinson’s.

In these images he photographed some of the patients standing in front of a mirror and added an image of their younger self looking back at them, a way to remind them of who they were.

In 2011 he was the only American to be named in the Top 100 (out of 2,760):
Illustrator
Graphic Artist
Art Director
Design Shop
Photographer
Student Portfolio

In addition to the commercial shooting he does, Hussey has taught photography on the college level at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York as well as Texas A&M University-Commerce, followed by working in the Conservation Laboratory at George Eastman House.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoy his work as it isn’t your typical photography, it has a story to tell. His work can be quite eye opening as I feel like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s is easily a forgotten issue to some people – people don’t realise how soul crushing it can be not only witnessing someone dear to you forgetting who they are, but everyone else around them – including you.

Artist: Christine McConnell

Christine McConnell is a photographer based in California who mainly does shoots with a 50’s feel to it.

In her piece “Self Portrait” she experimented with the cloning technique. The image is easy to the eye due to the use of pastel colours rather than big and bold colours. The way the other versions of herself are interacting with their environment gives the image that little extra depth to help make it believable, just like Daisuke Takakure.

Although she is known for her “pin-up” aesthetic, her talents don’t end at photography as she also has quite the reputation for her incredible cake creations. Another one of her many talents include creating the majority of the clothes used in her shoots and also styles the hair.

Final Evaluation (Unit 6)

For this project we were set the task of creating three photographic objects. At first I found it quite difficult as I was conflicted on what paths to take, at first I researched artists such as Aldo Tolino and found myself intrigued by his pieces but once we did a workshop attempting origami, I realised that doing pieces based around origami wasn’t the best idea.

One part I feel I was most fond of was the research, I throughly enjoyed looking at various different artists and seeing their progress as well as discovering different techniques they use, this helped me greatly on deciding what I wished to do for my final piece allowing me to open up multiple options to chose from.

Personally, I feel as though I could have done more experimentations. But I think that was all to do with how conflicted I was with the choices, I was finding it extremely difficult to come to a final decision and I believe I could have accomplished it much sooner if I would have attempted more experimentations.

Another artist I discovered was Szymon Roginski, during the beginning I wanted to use his techniques for my final piece or at least incorporate them into it. However, I did try making some cubes out of photos I had taken and didn’t think I would be able to create three whole pieces based around it. Which is when I began researching other artists such as Alma Haser.

After I looked at her pieces I became inspired to try something similar but I knew I would have found it difficult since I had already struggled with the cubes and the origami.

I believe my final piece in the end came out much better than I had originally planned, although the images did not come out perfectly I am still happy with the overall piece. I did encounter quite a few issues at the beginning and I was becoming quite frustrated and stressed overall because I was running out of time, but I am still happy with what I did accomplish. I could have turned the images into stickers in order to get them onto the rubik’s cubes however I didn’t have the time nor the resources to do so.

If I could do it all again, I would most definitely try more experimentations and push myself to try out new techniques in order to gain new skills that could later prove quite useful.

Artist: Marcel Christ

Marcel Christ is a still life artist and a short film director based in Amsterdam. He has done some incredible pieces involving powder paint, before making his approach to this technique he studied both chemical engineering and photography.

The black background really helps capture just how vibrant the colours are and the mixture of colours combined creates this chaotically beautiful explosion.

He has also done some advertisement for several companies.

One that really caught my eye was a piece he did for Pepsi where he used powder paint in the image. In his usual style, he has a dark background and the vibrant pink to go with the can as it’s cherry flavoured.

Marcel doesn’t just work with powder paint, he has done many other incredible and interesting pieces with acrylic paint and other types of liquids.
