Jérémy Tourvieille is a graphic designer and photographer from Paris, he moved to Switzerland in order to finish his studies in Geneva. Always being drawn to graphics after seeing pieces in galleries and museums, he later became a graphic designer and then created his own fonts after finding another passion, in typography.

He found his inspiration from contemporary art, some being found on sites such as Pinterest and Behance.

When I first came across his work, I found myself instantly intrigued. The lines and the circles give the images a sense of depth, personally I think it can symbolise identity quite well; the circles in the second image could mean the different layers of identities as everyone goes through a time in their life where they experiment to try and discover who they truly are and to me, this piece showcases that.

The first image can also show that, due to the serious facial expression which almost looks like a hurt expression.

The majority of his work have a similar theme; black and white whilst a single part of the model’s face becomes one of the main focuses, usually the eyes.

However some of his pieces involve similar themes, bold text is placed over the top to gain more attention, as the colourful font stands out easier as the images are black and white. This makes the text the main focus, but the fact that the text is slightly jumbled rather than being in a line makes it a little harder to read causing the reader to piece it all together.

He also has some other advertisement using a different theme but also keeping it similar at the same time, it still has the black and white and still has the bold lettering but it has some other effects. The black triangles almost form a mask over the top half of her face, once again linking to identity; a mask commonly being used to hide your face, meaning she could be ashamed of who she is or who she is becoming.

When you look closer to the image, you see the black triangles are multiple layers of her face as you can only just make out the eyes, which also helps link it to identity as it could be her masking her true identity with fake personas.

Artist: Colette Fu

Colette Fu was raised in New Jersey,  graduating with a degree in both French and literature however it wasn’t until she switched courses as she ventured to China. Here she discovered her passion for storytelling and photography, she moved back to the United States where she later earned a MFA in photography.

Large-scale pop-up book shows a young woman with street-food from a region in China.

Once relocating in Philadelphia, she began to truly explore her passion. Colette then taught herself how to create pop ups after becoming fascinated by them and later received a Fullbright Fellowship in 2008, allowing her to create her art based around the Yunnan people which later inspired her “We are the tiger people” series which goes in depth about their culture; their food, traditions and the religious aspect of it.

Colette has also done work for Vogue China, Canon Asia, Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) and also designed China’s largest pop up book. Colette also teaches classes locally and even abroad.

Origami Workshop

In this workshop we were shown how to make a swan out of a small piece of paper. Many people make origami look incredibly easy when in reality it is the polar opposite, for me personally at least.

Mine took a few attempts but I did get a swan in the end, I had issues with the wings as they would not fold outwards however I did not want to tear it. Although I originally had an idea to do an origami based piece but now that I have tried it, I can safely say I don’t feel confident repeating it.

Artist: Alma Haser

Alma Haser is a German artist who specialises in portraiture due to her background in fine art. Using her knowledge on photography and collages, she combines both techniques to create abnormal shapes using a printed image of a person’s face. During 2010, Haser finalised her Photography degree and has won several awards throughout the years; including The Magenta Foundation’s Bright Spark award in 2013.

She did a series using these 3D pieces to place them over the face creating a set of unique and abstract pieces.

The series, Cosmic Surgery was originally meant to be called “Cosmetic Surgery” as she said it appeared as though the subjects had undergone plastic surgery, however Alma had a habit of talking very quickly and her dyslexia caused her to mix words up. Although it was a mistake, she liked the name for it and even said it fitted the theme as they all look like they’re from another world.

Some of the shapes seem a lot more complex than others, some have only a couple of sides creating a softer look to it whilst others have a larger amount of shapes causing the image to gain a very jagged and almost threatening look.

Another one of her series of artwork is called “Pseudo” which is possibly one of my favourite pieces she has done. It isn’t something I have ever seen and yet I am so fascinated by it. None of her pictures are identical, they may have a similar theme but they have different colours, shapes and a completely unique aesthetic overall.

Alma said that she is in a constant search for new ways to shape her work and new ways to explore to expand her knowledge, she also said that the majority of her finished pieces are usually done accidentally but only after many hours of experimentations.

Alma’s most recent series was named “Within 15 Minutes” where she created several 1000 piece puzzles with impressive attention to detail. What makes it even more impressive is the fact she did this all by hand, presumably taking up an incredible amount of time. The end result definitely being worth it.

Artist: Aldo Tolino

Aldo Tolino is an Austrian artist who attended the University for Applied Arts where he received a PhD after focusing his research on art, games and media theory. Although he is known for his incredible artwork, he is also a philosopher; he is currently working on a book which contains some of the techniques he has explored before such as sculptures, paper folding and textures.

Aldo is best known for using digital art to create disproportioned portraits, most commonly using a person and creating a distorted sculpture of their face. He does this by printing a portrait photograph and folds it repeatedly, taking it apart and then folding it all over again in order to get the piece he had envisioned, then photographing the end result.

The piece shown above is called “Faust als Marionettentheater” a piece based on the Salzburg Marionette Theatre which was originally founded in 1913 by Professor Anton Aicher. On his website there is a quote by Gretel Aicher, where she talks about her passion for marionettes, “What then is the fascination of a life with marionettes? Is it the pleasure of performing? The appeal of mastering an ‘instrument’ to the point of virtousity?” she later said “the transformation of one’s self?” which makes me believe this piece is based around finding your own identity.

Portraits aren’t where his pieces end, he does landscape pieces where he does a similar thing with the portraits but it has pictures of lakes and mountains compacted into one piece.

This piece is called “Mother” which is a motherboard which is generally found in microcomputers. This piece shows his knowledge on this topic and being able to transform it into a work of art.

Personally, I like a lot of his pieces such as the one above. It is abstract and quite easy on the eye compared to some artist who do a similar theme, they have big, bold colours that can sometimes really clash. His pieces have so much depth to them as they might seem like a distorted portrait but later if you read, they have such fascinating meanings.

Final Evaluation

For this unit we were given the task of capturing sound and producing 3-7 A3 photographs of said topic. We did workshops where we experimented with multiple exposure and sound triggers to help us find our footing. I found it to be a lot of fun, at first I expected it to be very difficult to accomplish 7 images but it turned out to be more enjoyable once I started doing my own experimentations.

The most entertaining part of the project was when I did the paint on the drums. Originally I wanted to use liquid paint on either drums or speakers but in the end I settled for powdered paint, which I had to bring in plastic covering to place on the floor and some of the curtains.

Over the duration of this project I gained new skills such as learning how to do multiple exposure and photography in dark environments. Two things I had attempted previously but was never really successful as I never had a full understanding of them.

Personally, I would like to do more practice on doing photography in dark rooms as I want to take photos at gigs and night photography but had struggled a bit with the session.

Researching other artists was really fascinating for me as I always enjoy seeing other people’s work and how much they have developed their unique style since they first started.

A good example of this is Brandon Woelfel who I thoroughly enjoyed looking at his work as I feel like I picked up many new techniques and numerous ways to shoot my photos just by watching some of his videos that involved him showing you the behind the scenes of his photo shoots, as well as him showing you how he takes certain shots. After watching his videos I then started experimenting myself, trying some of the light tracing shots as well as using objects to cast shadows and shining lights through glass objects to give off the rainbow effect he gets in large portion of his shots.

To me, I feel like the powdered paint was the most successful part of my project as I not only had I had so much fun doing it but some the shots came out better than I could have ever imagined and would happily do it again, maybe even try it with various other techniques that I have picked up.

As much as I enjoyed the paint, it had caused a bit of an issue as it was fun until it came to cleaning up. There were sheets and bags taped to the floor but the dust from the paint seemed to get everywhere and it took several hours to clear up. But overall I feel as though it went well, I would’ve retaken some images but due to the amount of mess it creates, it wasn’t worth taking another 100 or more photos if it was going to be so problematic.

If we were do have the chance to re do this topic, I would probably do much more research and also try to branch out to different techniques as I feel as though I stuck to the easier options, I did much better than the last topic as I didn’t do many experiments but now I have so much more knowledge and feel more confident trying to mix together different techniques to create more authentic pieces.

Artist: Marcel Christ

Marcel Christ is a still life artist and a short film director based in Amsterdam. He has done some incredible pieces involving powder paint, before making his approach to this technique he studied both chemical engineering and photography.

The black background really helps capture just how vibrant the colours are and the mixture of colours combined creates this chaotically beautiful explosion.

He has also done some advertisement for several companies.

One that really caught my eye was a piece he did for Pepsi where he used powder paint in the image. In his usual style, he has a dark background and the vibrant pink to go with the can as it’s cherry flavoured.

Marcel doesn’t just work with powder paint, he has done many other incredible and interesting pieces with acrylic paint and other types of liquids.

Powder Paint

Once I had done research on artists such as Marcel Christ, I knew I wanted to do powdered paint. It was a concept I instantly became intrigued by. A group of us decided to do a photoshoot together as we all wanted to do the same technique. It took a bit of planning as we had to find stuff to place down on the floor to prevent any mess.

DSC_0088 edited.jpg    DSC_0074 edited.jpg

We put tarpaulin and bin bags on the floor to stop any paint flying everywhere, at first the photos were not coming out as we had hoped but after a while we got the hang of it. What we decided was to call out before we hit the drum so whoever was taking the picture could prepare themselves and take the photo on time.

DSC_0988 edited.jpg

Overall the photoshoot was very successful, we got countless shots that came out incredibly well. This is definitely something I would happily do again, it was fun to do and the results were great.

During the beginning of the session, we weren’t timing it right as we kept getting the blurred drumsticks but once we got the lighting right and the timing down, it slowly came together. That is where I feel like we started to truly enjoy it.

DSC_0055 edited.jpg

Originally I wanted to put the powdered paint into something to throw it to create an explosion, so I had looked at purchasing some paint bombs and some coloured smoke bombs to do a similar shoot to Brandon Woefel. However, I am pleased with the results nonetheless.

At first we only used one colour at a time and then slowly started to mix the colours in different combinations; red and yellow, blue and green, etc. Finally, we began to mix them all together and got some great shots including the one below.

DSC_0048 edited.jpg

What we did was separate the drum into quarters and allocated each colour a section. Then we tried hitting the drum in the centre to get all the colours in one hit. This is one of my favourite shots as there are so many colours making it look less plain.

This photograph taken by Nan Goldin, an American photographer known for her constant exploration of LGBT bodies due to her fascination, she also had an interest in “moments of intimacy” both subjects making many appearances in her work.

The picture was taken from The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, a 1985 show involving photographs taken between 1979 and 1986. It was an autobiographical document of some of New York’s no wave music and art scene, based around the Stonewall gay subculture.

During the early hours of the 28th of June 1969 a series of riots took place at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. These riots were violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community, the gay community in particular. They were considered the most important act leading up to the gay liberation movement.

Gay Americans in the 1950’s and 1960’s were faced with an anti-gay legal system. The last years of 1960 were several controversial movements taking place. The most well known being, the Civil Rights movement that began during the late 1940’s and ended in 1968 where people fought against racial discrimination and for equal rights.

Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s very little establishments allowed gay people to enter, those who did allow them to enter were usually bars. During this time police raids took place regularly, the Stonewall Inn acting as a home to many members of the LGBT and the homeless youth.

Today, it is planning to host the largest LGBT pride in 2019. It is going to be held in New York to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

Nan Goldin’s work is based around her own experiences with family members, friends and lovers. One of her most famous pieces is a picture that was taken of her after her partner beat her.
